Internationally renowned for its rich history and the quality of its exhibitions, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Céret was designed by Barcelona architect Jaume Freixa, himself a pupil of Josep Lluis Sert, who designed the Miró Foundation in Barcelona and the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
Its sober architecture, centered around two patios, offers beautiful spaces for the exhibition of works, and gives pride of place to light. This high-quality architecture provided space that had become too cramped for the increasingly important temporary exhibitions.
The local authorities responsible for the Musée d’Art Moderne de Céret (Région Occitanie, Département des Pyrénées-Orientales and Ville de Céret) have therefore jointly committed to the construction of a new wing, and have entrusted the work, following a competition, to the architectural firm Pierre-Louis Faloci, winner of the 2018 Grand Prix national d’architecture.
The new wing will be inaugurated with an exhibition by internationally renowned Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, whose monumental sculptures, imbued with poetry and humanity, are admired the world over.
The museum’s permanent collection, which bears witness to the enchanting artistic history of this small town that has seen all the great names of the 20th and 21st centuries pass through its doors – Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Herbin, Gris, Soutine, Chagall, Miró… and even contemporary artists such as Tàpies, Viallat and Bioulès… will be presented in a completely renewed, well-documented scenography, enabling the public to relive this page in the history of art.
The museum’s reception area, educational workshops, bookshop-boutique, auditorium-projection room, patios and terraces, and belvedere offering a view of the historic center will make up an ensemble guaranteeing a high-quality welcome, a museum that is a veritable living space where visitors can wander around as they please, with the entrance ticket allowing full-day access.
