Conditions treated with Le Boulou thermal baths

Over the centuries, the town of Le Boulou has established itself as a health resort thanks to its waters, recognized since the Middle Ages for their curative virtues, and its thermal baths have been welcoming curists in search of well-being ever since. The particular chemical composition of the water has been recognized by the Académie de Médecine as having therapeutic virtues. The valley is the setting for numerous thermo-mineral springs. Here and there, water gushes up from the depths, laden with minerals, after decades spent traveling through the rock. Copper, iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium – each spring has a unique and constant physico-chemical composition. Then, they bubble! Their high carbon dioxide content makes them naturally gaseous. And finally, they contain sodium bicarbonate: they are the only sodium bicarbonate waters in the Pyrenees. They also contain numerous minerals and trace elements: boron, copper, iron, fluorine, lithium, magnesium…

The thermal springs at Le Boulou don’t seem to have been exploited by the Romans, probably because their temperature was too low, unlike the hot springs at nearby Amélie-les-Bains. In 869, a charter from Charles-le-Chauve mentions a spring near Saint-Martin de Fenollar (known as the Saint-Martin spring), used at the time by the monks of the Arles-sur-Tech abbey. Renowned since the Middle Ages for their therapeutic qualities, the Boulou baths are rich in magnesium and mineral salts.however, little was known about the Boulou springs, which were studied in 1754 and again in 1756. Their success grew with the new craze for thermalism. The idea of creating a spa took shape in 1840. The establishment opened in 1859. The Clémentine spring was also tapped in 1859, followed by the Boulou spring in 1868 and the Milieu spring in 1885. These springs were declared to be in the public interest in 1898. The town was even christened “Vichy-du-Midi”, a sign of the importance of this activity in the region.
