Discovering Don Quixote’s windmills
Christian IZARD invites you to explore this exhibition dedicated to the windmills of the Way of Don Quixote, a journey through the imagination and legend. These windmills, situated in the heart of La Mancha, are not merely architectural structures, but also silent witnesses to the adventures of the famous knight-errant. According to legend, Don Quixote, in his quest for justice and glory, mistook these windmills for fearsome giants, ready to engulf him in an epic battle. It has become a legend that continues to capture the imagination. Along the ‘Don Quixote Trail’, each windmill seems to hold within it a story, a legend, a symbol of bravery in the face of adversity. The windmills of Consuegra, with their twelve giants topped by helmet-shaped roofs, evoke that legendary battle in which the hero, armed with his courage and his folly, faced imaginary monsters. But beyond the legend, these windmills also embody the region’s cultural and historical richness. Some, such as those in Tembleque, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, illustrate ancient ingenuity and traditional craftsmanship. Others, in Herencia or Mota del Cuervo, evoke rural life and agricultural prosperity, bearing witness to a past shaped by man and nature. What if you were to look at them, not as windmills, but as the giants that Don Quixote believed he saw?
