As part of the 6th Rencontres Culturelles, Républicaines et Transpyrénéennes event, Catalan artist and writer Manuel Menéndez will be giving a talk devoted to the Machado brothers: Antonio and Manuel, two figures of 20th-century Spanish literature. History separated Antonio, the Republican, from Manuel, who chose the opposite camp. The aim of this talk is to evoke the destiny of Antonio Machado and Manuel Machado, who opted for Franco's side in 1936, but who were linked by indefectible bonds of brotherhood and mutual esteem. Mario Montané, a retired musician and Spanish teacher, will present a musical adaptation of some of Antonio Machado's poems.
Born in Seville in 1875, Antonio Machado is one of the greatest Spanish poets of the 20th century. He made his name with his first collection, Soledades (1903), and established his reputation in Spain and beyond with Campos de Castilla (Fields of Castile) in 1912. Caught up in the Retirada, the Spanish poet went into exile in Collioure, where he died in February 1939. Free admission
