Fort Bellegarde at Le Perthus

Fort Bellegarde extends over 14 hectares and comprises a first fortified enclosure surrounded by a ditch dug into the rock, with five bastions: Perthus, Saint André, Espagne, Précipice and a half-moon closed by a drawbridge. A second, ditchless enclosure features a round tower and four small bastions. The whole complex was designed to withstand prolonged sieges and house up to 1,200 men and 150 horses.

Fort Bellegarde An architectural masterpiece

Located at the foot of the Pyrenees, on the Spanish border, Fort Bellegarde in Le Perthus, built by Vauban in the 17th century on the basis of earlier fortifications, is a masterpiece of military architecture. The architect decided to build a full-fledged citadel in 1668. While work was in progress, in 1674, Spanish troops seized the fort, then decided to modify it themselves. However, the work never saw the light of day, as in 1675, the French regained possession of the fort. Thereafter, the fort played no further part in history until the Second World War, when it was used as an internment camp in January and February 1939, during the dark days of the Retirada.

Currently open to the public.
