Gravity-fed irrigation canals are a heritage and an asset for our rural and mountain areas. Some are thousands of years old, and they play a role in the economy, social organisation and landscape planning.
In the Cerdagne, a high-altitude cross-border plain drained by numerous valleys all leading to the Sègre, man has created a dense network of canals, promising future harvests and prosperity, but requiring constant care and maintenance. The valley bottoms were first developed in the Middle Ages, followed by the hillsides and foothills in the late modern era.
After a presentation of the specific geography of the Cerdagne, Séquia Alta looks back at the history of these canals, how they function and their environmental role. Combining elements of our literary culture with scientific elements, Séquia Alta takes us on a walk through the canals of Cerdanya.
