Fontfrède

in Céret

The wild greenery, the cool fountain, the views overlooking the entire Roussillon plain to the Mediterranean Sea and its altitude of more than 1000m make this an exceptional spot when the heat of summer arrives.

As Fontfrède also sits on the mountainous border line between Spain and France, this path was also the one taken in the 19th century by smugglers…

We are reminded of the proximity to southern Catalonia by the stele for the Escapees of France: those who, during the Second World War, crossed the border, guided by “smugglers” in search of the resistance, earning the town of Céret “La Croix de Guerre” (a military medal).
